After 12 rounds the two South Dublin County teams, Peamount United FC from Newcastle and Shamrock Rovers FC from Tallaght were one and two in the SSE Airitricity League of Ireland Women’s Premier Division table on 28 and 27 points respectively. Peamount United’s one loss had come at home (1-4) to third-placed Shelbourne FC in Series 5. Shamrock Rovers remained undefeated but with three draws. Northside rivals Shelbourne FC and Bohemian FC were in third and fourth on 22 points each. Galway United were the top provincial team, lying in sixth on 19 points, while Athlone Town on the the river Shannon were seventh on 16 points, separated from Wexford Youths WFC on goal difference. The drop from the South Leinster team to eighth-placed DLR Waves from Dún-Laoghaire-Rathdown in Dublin was a huge 7 points with Limerick’s Treaty United FC a further three points back in ninth spot. Connacht’s Sligo Rovers were in tenth on 3 points and Cork City, the second Munster team in the league were on a single point. [References: 1-2]

The FAI SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Premier Division just completed series 6 of the 2023 season on St. Patrick’s Day. Bohemian FC lead the Table on 15 points, three ahead of Derry City FC on 12 points in second place with Dundalk FC in third on 11 points. Shamrock Rovers and St. Patrick’s Athletic FC were left struggling on 5 points in second and third last place after a 2-2 draw at Tallaght Stadium on St. Patrick’s Day.

Series 16 (19 May 2023)

Derry City moved back to the top of the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Premier Division after a 4-1 defeat of UCD AFC at the Brandywell as Shamrock Rovers suffered a shock 1-2 loss at home to Drogheda United FC. In other matches Dundalk FC and Bohemian FC drew 2-2 in a game both needed to win if they were to make up ground on the leaders. St. Patrick’s Athletic joined Dundalk on 26 points after leap-frogging Shelbourne FC with a 1-0 victory at Tolka Park. Shelbourne dropped back to sixth place with the loss. Sligo Rovers FC lost 1-0 at Cork City, helping Cork City to move six points clear of UCD AFC at the foot of the table. [References: 1-2]

Series 18 (26-27 May 2023)

Derry City missed out on the chance to stretch their lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division after losing 1-0 at Sligo Rovers in a North-West derby. Nearest challengers Shamrock Rovers FC lost 1-0 at struggling Cork City FC the previous night. Moving to three points behind the Hoops were fierce rivals Bohemians as the Red and Black drew 0-0 with near neighbours Shelbourne in the Dublin Northside derby. St. Patrick’s Athletic, the South City rivals to both Rovers and Bohs defeated Dundalk FC 2-1 at Richmond Park in Inchicore to move clear of Dundalk into fourth place on 29 points, just one behind Bohs. Meanwhile in County Louth, Drogheda United defeated UCD AFC 3-1 in a relegation six-pointer, with the loss meaning the students were further adrift at the bottom as both Drogheda and Cork won. By the beginning of February Arklow Town A were well out in front of the Wicklow & District Football League Premier Division with 23 points from 10 games. Second placed Newtown United A were in second, 12 points behind although with three games in hand. Shamrock Celtic on 11 points, Ashford Rovers A on 10 and Glencormac United on 9 were among the chasing pack. St. Peter’s from Fassaroe were in sixth place on 8 points although had only played five games while Avonmore on 8 points and Wicklow Town on 7 points were at the foot of the eight team League Table. The Wicklow & District Football League (WDFL) is a Junior Level (Minor League in American Terms) Adult Soccer League based in and around County Wicklow in Ireland. Junior Level Soccer in Ireland comprises mostly County & District Soccer Leagues and comes in at Level 3 in the Pyramid, below the League of Ireland (Senior) and Provincial Leagues (Intermediate) in the Soccer Pyramid in Ireland. Report

Shamrock, undoubtedly named after Irish team Shamrock Rovers, finished second in the Christchurch League in New Zealand in 1962 – one of four Major Leagues in New Zealand Soccer. The Winners of each of the four Major Leagues – Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin then went foreward to the Rothmans Tournament Playoffs, won 3-2 on aggregate by Northern of Dunedin versus Eastern Suburbs of Auckland. This was followed by the Chatham Cup knockout tournament Finals, where the winners of each of the Four Major Leagues’ Cup Competitions played a single elimination cup versus the four winners of the Minor Leagues’ Cup Competitions (Hamilton, Nelson, New Plymouth and Invercargill). Hamilton Technical Old Boys, although from one of the Minor Leagues defeated Dunedin Cup Winners and also Rothman Tournament winners Northern 4-1 in the Chatham Cup Final. [References: 1]

Report

Atletico Marte of El Salvador, which may be claimed as the “Irish” team in Central America due to the probable origins of organised Athletic Contests in the Tailteann Games in Ireland in 1600BC, won the CONCACAF Cup-Winners’ Cup in 1991 despite losing the last game in the Final Round Group 0-1 to Communicaciones of neighbours Guatemala. Atletico Marte had won their two previous games in the Final Round in Guatemala 1-0 versus Universidad Guadalajara of Mexico and 4-1 versus Caribbean qualifiers Racing Club of Guadeloupe. Ancient History of Athletics

The Tailteann Games are an Ancient Sporting and Athletic Event hosted in what is today Teltown in Co. Meath, Ireland. The background to these games, which folklore scholars believe date back to 1600BC, approximately 900 years before the Olympic Games in Greece, are that they were a tribute to the Goddess Tailtiu, the wife of Eochaid mac Eirc, the last of the Fir Bolg High Kings. Tailtiu was foster mother to Lugh, a member of the Tuatha De Danann, an invading force in Ireland which defeated the Native Fir Bolg (as accounted in the “Book of Invasions”). After Eochaid mac Eirc’s death, and also Tailtiu’s death (possibly while clearing land for agriculture), Lugh instituted the Tailteann Games in her honour near the seat of the High Kings in Co. The Games themselves ran for hundreds of years from the July fortnight up to August 1. events included Hurling, Long Jump, High Jump, Running, Spear Throwing, Boxing, Sword Fighting, Archery, Wrestling, Swimming, Chariot Racing, Strategy Games and crafts, storytelling, singing and dancing – all competitors attempting to be crowned best in Ireland. Round 1

In the Western half of the draw York United eliminated Atletico Ottawa 8-7 and Cavalry FC defeated FC Edmonton 2-1 in two all CPL matches, while Vancouver Whitecaps FC of the MLS disposed of Valour FC Winnipeg of the Canadian Premier League 2-0. The Eastern half of the draw saw Guelph United – the Provincial Champions of Ontario – lose 0-2 at home to Halifax’s HFX Wanderers FC; and Forge FC Hamilton defeat Mont-Royal Outremont – the Quebec Provincial Champions – by two goals to nil.

Quarter-Finals (24-26 May 2022)

It was as expected in the Canadian Championship Quarter-Finals for 2022 as all three Major League Soccer clubs reached the Semi-Finals. CF Montréal defeated Forge FC of Hamilton 3-0, Vancouver Whitecaps FC won 6-4 at Cavalry FC of Calgary and Toronto FC won 2-1 at HFX Wanderers in their trip to Nova Scotia. York United joined the major three in the Semi-Finals with a 6-5 win at Pacific FC of Victoria on Vancouver Island. [References: 2-6]

Semi-Finals (23 June 2022)

Toronto FC defeated arch rivals CF Montréal 4-0 at BMO Field to meet Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the Final of the Canadian Championship. Vancouver had defeated the only Canadian Premier League to make it this far in the knockout competition for MLS, CPL and top Provincial teams, York United, 2-1. [References: 4-6]

Vancouver Whitecaps FC defeated Toronto FC 5-3 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in the Final of the Canadian Championship 2022, the Major Premier Knockout Cup in Canadian Soccer, featuring the three Canadian Major League Soccer Teams, the eight Canadian Premier League teams and the Champions of Quebec and Ontario Provincial Leagues. Recap

Barbados, whose population are partly descended from Irish captives sold into slavery during Oilver Cromwell’s invasion of Ireland [References: 4], did very well in their opening Group match in the CFU Caribbean Cup Final Round in Trinidad, by drawing with Caribbean power and hosts Trinidad & Tobago 1-1. Barbados had less luck in their subsequent matches, losingb 0-2 to Haïti three days later and 2-3 to Martinique in their final match. The Sydney Joseph Group was the stronger of the two groups in the Final Round, with both traditional Caribbean powers, Trinidad & Tobago and Haïti going on to meet in the Final, which Haïti won 2-1. Martinique would also be a very strong team in Caribbean football. The other group, the Bobby Sookram Group featured Guadeloupe and Cuba, who qualified for the Semi-Finals ahead of Guyana and St. Vincent & the Grenadines. [References: 2]. Week 1 Recap (12 March-13 March 2022)

Republic of Ireland’s Dan Casey and Richie Ryan were both yellow-carded in this ill-tempered match in Northern California. Casey was yellow-carded after eigth minutes and Ryan was yellow-carded four minutes into time added on in the first half as El Paso Locomotive gave up a goal to Rodrigo Lopez which cancelled their earlier strike by Sonupe. Martinez (84′) and Keko (90-+1′) scored two late goals to give Sacramento Republic the win. Ryan was one one of three El Paso players yellow-carded in the incident just before halftime and there were a total of seven yellow cards handed out during the match, four of them in the first half to El Paso. In other games Niall Logue was yellow-carded after 39 minutes but played the full 90 minutes for Memphis 901 FC as they lost 0-3 at home to Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Stephen Carroll also played the full 90 minutes in defense for Detroit City FC as they lost 0-1 at San Antonio FC. [References: 2-12]

Week 2 Recap (19 March-20 March 2022)

Aaron Molloy gave Memphis 901FC the lead after 13 minutes in their game at AutoZone Park versus Oakland Roots FC. Memphis 901FC went 2-0 up before halftime, and although Oakland Roots FC pulled one back in the 81st minute, Memphis 901FC held on in an ill-tempered game which saw three yellow cards for Memphis 901 FC and four yellow cards for Oakland Roots FC [References: 2]

Ireland’s Stephen Carroll played the full 90 minutes in Detroit City’s 1-0 win versus Charleston Battery [References: 3-4]

Another of Ireland’s USL Championship trailblazers Richie Ryan came on as a substitute after 65 minutes in El Paso Locomotive’s 1-2 loss at home in Southwest University Park as the West Texas team went down to Southwest rivals New Mexico United in an ill-tempered match that saw five yellow cards handed out to El Paso and four to New Mexico. Dan Casey and Lee Desmond, two more of the Republic of Ireland’s contingent in the USL Championship played the full 90 minutes in Sacramento Republic’s 0-2 loss at Torero Stadium in San Diego versus the San Diego Loyal SC. Desmond was yellow carded after 39 minutes, one of four Sacramento Republic FC players yellow-carded along with three San Diego Loyal SC players in this Californian derby game. [References: 2, 9-10]

Richie Ryan played his second game in five days for El Paso Locomotive FC in a Thursday evening match-up with Las Vegas Lights FC, this time playing the full 90 minutes in a game that saw 9 goals – four for the home team El Paso Locomotive FC and five for the visiting Las Vegas Lights. If that was not enough drama and excitement for the fans of these Southwest derby match teams, there were also 9 cards handed out – four yellow for each team and one red for Las Vegas. About USL Championship 2022 – Republic of Ireland Players

Seven Republic of Ireland players are signed to USL Championship teams in 2022 – Richie Ryan (El Paso Locomotive FC), Niall Logue (Memphis 901 FC), Dan Casey (Sacramento Republic FC), and Niall McCabe (Louiville City FC) return from 2021, while Stephen Carroll (Detroit City FC) makes his debut for Detroit City FC; Lee Desmond joins Casey at Sacramento Republic FC and Aaron Molloy joins Logue at Memphis 901 FC.
