Zambia won the COSAFA Castle Cup in 1997 – the Regional Soccer Tournament for Southern Africa – by finishing top of the 5-team Final Round on 8 points, two ahead of second placed Namibia, with Mozambique a further point behind in third. They lifted the title after drawing 1-1 away to nearest challengers Namibia in the final fixture of the round-robin tournament.
