Teams in Bold and Italics were founder members of the Scottish Football League in 1890-91.

Report

Irish Catholic teams have played in the Scottish Football League sice its inception in 1890-91, with Celtic (Glasgow) first playing the SFA Cup in 1889 and becoming founder mmbers of the Scottish Football League in 1890. Hibernian (Edinburgh) joined three years later in 1893-94. Dundee United, replacing Dundee Hibernians (1910-11 to 1914-15 and again from 1921-22 for only one season) joined in 1923-24 when the SFL was expancded to a third Division. Dumbarton Harp were a shortlived SFL team during that Division 3 expansion, lasting two seasons (until 1924-25). Celtic, Hibernians and Dundee United are members of the Scottish Professional Football League to this day.

Report

The Fermanagh and Western Football League created a fourth division in 1975-76, only seven years after adding a second division and four after a third division was created. No team won the Division twice from the first season when Roadhouse SSC won the title to the last in 1998-99 when Enniskillen Town United Colts triumphed. There were two periords when the Division was scrapped altogether ( 1979-80 to 1984-85 and 1990-91 to 1993-94) before it was replaced by the Reserve League in 1999-2000.

Report

The Fermanagh and Western Football League (Soccer) played its first seasn in 1904-05, which was won by St. Michaels Hall Celtic who won five of the first six league titles. After a break from 2013-14 to 2018-19 due to World War I, Enniskillen Corinthians emerged as the next great team, winning five titles in the 1920s. They won two more in the 1930s with Omagh Depot three times winners during the decade. RAF teams won five Championships during World War II, but then when things went back to normal, Fivemiletown United won twice to start off the 1950s, then Enniskillen Corinthians won three times in four years, vying for the title with Enniskille Rangers who won three in five years.

In the 1960s Enniskillen Rangers took over as the dominant club, winning five in a row from 1961-62 to 1965-66. Lisbellaw United won twice and the Enniskillen Corinthians twice to finish off the decade. The 1970s saw a Lisbellaw United win five times in six yearsfrom 1975-76 to 1980-81. Shelbourne then won three in a row before Irvinestown Wanderers (twice) and Enniskillen Rangers (four times) decided the Championshp between themselves from 1984-85 to 1991-92. Then for the next five years it was Shelbourne (twice) and Dergview (three times Champions).

Ballinamallard United Reserves won twice either side of the Millennium, and Enniskillen Town United won five in a row from 2004-05 to 2008-09, the first team since Enniskillen Rangers in 1965-66 to achieve that feat. Lisbellaw United won three in a row immediately following that, and Strathroy Harps then won three times in four years. Enniskillen Rangers won two times in the late 2010s, before Tummery Athletic put a new name on the winners roll in 2019-20. The season was not completed in 2020-21.

Report

Ukraine and Korea Republic lit up the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland, reaching the Final, where Ukraine prevailed 3-1. To have won their first Major Tournament so close to home in neighbours Poland must have been extra special to them.

Korea Republic were also outstanding throughout, defeating Argentina in the Group Phase, a shock result which sent them through to Round 2. There they knocked out neighbours Japan 1-0 before progressing to the Semi-Finals with a penalties victory over Group A winners Senegal. There they defeated Ecuador 1-0, who finished third with a 1-0 win of their own over Italy in the Playoff.

Ukraine won Group D ahead of USA, Nigeria and Qatar and then defeated Panama 4-1, before knocking out both Colombia and Group B winners Italy by a scoreline of 1-0. Ukraine’s defence was their highlight, keeping three clean sheets in their seven matches (all 1-0 victories), and conceding only four altoghether, with two 3-1 wins and one 4-1 win.

Qualifiers

Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Paraguay Qualify for Finals in Mexico 1986.

Report

Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil – the three traditional powers in South American Futbol (Soccer) qualified for the Mexico ’86 Finals from the three groups as expected, although it was not without hiccups towards the end, with Argentina losing in Peru and just about managing to qualify from Group 1 with a 2-2 draw at home to the Peruvians in the Final fixture. Uruguay needed to beat Chile in their Final match to qualify, and did so, 2-1. Brazil meanwhile only drew their last two games at home to Paraguay and Bolivia 1-1. Paraguay won through from the four-team runners-up playoff for the fourth South American place at Mexico ’86.

Jorge Luis Burruchaga of Argentina, played with Nantes Atlantique in Brittany, France at the time. Atlantic civilisation is sometimes used as a wider way of identifying the Celtic peoples, including the Irish, along with other Atlantic civilisations to which the Celtic races were a part of in pre-history [Reference: 6-7]
