The Winners of each of the four Major Leagues – Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin then went foreward to the Rothmans Tournament Playoffs, won 3-2 on aggregate by Northern of Dunedin versus Eastern Suburbs of Auckland. [References: 1]

Report

Atletico Marte of El Salvador, which may be claimed as the “Irish” team in Central America due to the probable origins of organised Athletic Contests in the Tailteann Games in Ireland in 1600BC, won the CONCACAF Cup-Winners’ Cup in 1991 despite losing the last game in the Final Round Group 0-1 to Communicaciones of neighbours Guatemala. Atletico Marte had won their two previous games in the Final Round in Guatemala 1-0 versus Universidad Guadalajara of Mexico and 4-1 versus Caribbean qualifiers Racing Club of Guadeloupe. Ancient History of Athletics

The Tailteann Games are an Ancient Sporting and Athletic Event hosted in what is today Teltown in Co. Meath, Ireland. The background to these games, which folklore scholars believe date back to 1600BC, approximately 900 years before the Olympic Games in Greece, are that they were a tribute to the Goddess Tailtiu, the wife of Eochaid mac Eirc, the last of the Fir Bolg High Kings. Tailtiu was foster mother to Lugh, a member of the Tuatha De Danann, an invading force in Ireland which defeated the Native Fir Bolg (as accounted in the “Book of Invasions”). After Eochaid mac Eirc’s death, and also Tailtiu’s death (possibly while clearing land for agriculture), Lugh instituted the Tailteann Games in her honour near the seat of the High Kings in Co. Meath. [References: 2-3]

The Games themselves ran for hundreds of years from the July fortnight up to August 1. events included Hurling, Long Jump, High Jump, Running, Spear Throwing, Boxing, Sword Fighting, Archery, Wrestling, Swimming, Chariot Racing, Strategy Games and crafts, storytelling, singing and dancing – all competitors attempting to be crowned best in Ireland. Qualify for CONCACAF Nations Gold Cup 2007 in USA: Haïti, Trinidad & Tobago, Cuba and Guadeloupe. [References: 2]

Recap

Barbados, whose population are partly descended from Irish captives sold into slavery during Oilver Cromwell’s invasion of Ireland [References: 4], did very well in their opening Group match in the CFU Caribbean Cup Final Round in Trinidad, by drawing with Caribbean power and hosts Trinidad & Tobago 1-1. Barbados had less luck in their subsequent matches, losingb 0-2 to Haïti three days later and 2-3 to Martinique in their final match. The Sydney Joseph Group was the stronger of the two groups in the Final Round, with both traditional Caribbean powers, Trinidad & Tobago and Haïti going on to meet in the Final, which Haïti won 2-1. Martinique would also be a very strong team in Caribbean football. The other group, the Bobby Sookram Group featured Guadeloupe and Cuba, who qualified for the Semi-Finals ahead of Guyana and St. Vincent & the Grenadines. [References: 2]. In addition to the make-up of Barbados’ population thew Roman Catholic Cathedral in Barbados in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. [References: 3]. The Tournament doubled as the qualifying round for the CONCACAF Nations Gold Cup 2007, to be held in USA. [References: 2]

Week 1 Recap (25-28 February 2022)

Jon Gallagher, a native of Dundalk, Ireland, was on the subs bench for Austin FC’s 5-0 defeat of FC Cincinnati to open the 2022 MLS season. The other two Republic of Ireland players on MLS rosters, Derrick Wiiliams of LA Galaxy and Jake Mulraney of Atlanta United did not feature. Reference: [2-9]

Week 2 Recap (5-7 March 2022)

Republic of Ireland’s John Gallagher came on as a substitute, playing 13 minutes in Austin FC’s 5-1 victory over Inter Miami CF, a huge win for the second week running, which meant the Texas Capital’s amazing start to the season continued. Another Republic of Ireland player, Derrick Williams, although born in Germany moved to Waterford as a child where he made a name for himself at AFC Tramore, securing a contract with Aston Villa FC of the English Premier League in 2009. After spells at Bristol City (2013 to 2016) and Blackburn Rovers (2016 to 2021) before signing for LA Galaxy in March 2021, just before the MLS season started. He earned his first cap for Republic of Ireland versus France in 2018. Williams came on as a substitute with four minutes remaining in LA Galaxy’s 1-0 at Charlotte FC. References: [2-10]

Week 3 Recap (12-13 March 2022)

Republic of Ireland’s Jake Mulraney came on as a substitute with seven minutes to go in Atlanta United’s home game versus Southern rivals Charlotte FC, and made an immediate impact, the super-sub making two attempts on goal, one of which went in as Atlanta United won 2-1 to go fifth in the Eastern Conference, one point behind leaders Columbus Crew. J Martinez had put Atlanta United ahead from the Penalty spot after 60 minutes only for Charlotte FC to reply through A Armour 60 minutes later. Jake Mulraney’s introduction after 83 minutes for R Hernandez proved vital as he scored after six minutes of time added on to win the game for Atlanta United. Mulraney received a long ball out on the right wing, cut inside the Charlotte FC defender just inside the box and let fly, not even looking as the ball deflected of a Charlotte FC defender leaving the goalkeeper looking on helpless. [References: 2-7a, 14]

Another Irish player Jon Gallagher came on as a substitute for Austin FC as the Texans lost 0-1 at Portland Timbers for their first loss of the season, and Derrick Williams was an unused substitute in LA Galaxy’s 2-3 loss at Seattle Sounders. [References: 2-7a]

Week 4 Recap (19-21 March 2022)

Ireland’s Jake Mulraney came on as a substitute at halftime in Atlanta United’s 3-3 draw versus CF Montréal, a result which left Atlanta United in fifth place in the Eastern Conference. Jon Gallagher came on with 8 minutes remaining in Austin FC’s 0-0 draw with Seattle Sounders FC which left the Texans in fourth place in the Western Conference. Ireland’s Derrick Williams was an unused substitute in LA Galaxy’s 0-1 loss to Orlando City SC, which left LA Galaxy in seventh place in the Western Conference. [References: 2-7A]

Philadelphia Union led the Eastern Conference on 10 points after four games, and Los Angeles Football Club and Real Salt Lake were also on 10 points at the top of the Western Conference.

Recap

A League of Ireland XI travelled to Trinidad in the Caribbean to play in the Soccer Bowl 1989 International Tournament. Having beaten Ecuador (presumably on penalties) after a 1-1 draw in the Semi-Finals, the League of Ireland XI lost to hosts Trinidad & Tobago 1-0 in the Final. Peru finished third defeating Ecuador 2-1 in the Third Place Playoff. Reference: [1-2]. The Quality of opposition for the League of Ireland squad was undeniable with Ecuador and Peru, both South American countries, always strong, and Trinidad & Tobago at the time in line for a 1990 World Cup Finals berth (they would eventually lose out on the last day of Qualifying to USA). About the Soccer Bowl

The Soccer Bowl 1989 International Tournament was a preseason International Tournament held in Trinidad & Tobago that took its name from the Championship Game of the by then defunct North American Soccer League (1977-1985) Championship Game, also called Soccer Bowl, like Super Bowl in American Football (NFL).

About O’Higgins Soccer Team and General Bernardo O’Higgins

Like O’Higgins numerous Soccer teams in Chile reference the origins of the majority of Chileans in European ancestry. O’Higgins are named after General Bernardo O’Higgins, born in Chile out of marriage to Ambrosio O’Higgins, who was born in Ireland and Isabel Riquelme. Bernardo O’Higgins took charge of a rabble of a rebel army, despite having no military training himself and led the Liberation of Chile from Spanish rule in a war that lasted from 1810 to 1818. Today he is regarded as the liberator of Chile and the father of the Nation [2]. He is recognized by Football authorities not just in the name O’Higgins for the Soccer team, but also in the Copa Libertadores, the Liberators Cup, which is the South American equivalent of the UEFA Champions League, named in honour of all the South American Liberators.

Recap

Galicia, named after the Atlantic and Celtic region of North West Spain, finished second from bottom in the Venezuela First Division in 1992-93, and were relegated straight back down to the Second Division having being promoted the previous season [1]. Coincidentally they finished in the bottom three along with Italia and Portuguesa, two other teams named for regions in Mediterranean and Atlantic Europe from which the some of the settlers of South America and Venezuela came [1, 2]

About Galicia

Galicia is a Province of North West Spain, speaking Gallego, a language related to both Spanish and Portuguese, however, since 1981 there has been a movement in Galicia to link with the Atlantic and Celtic past of Galicia. Celtic Galicia compares itself not just in terms of weather to the Atlantic fringe of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, but also to the Celtic past which dates back to the 6th Century A.D. There is both a sporting and cultural heritage being revived, with Gaelic Football starting in the 2010s and the traditional instrument – a form of bagpipe being promoted by Celtic musicians [2].

The Galicia Football Club in Venezuela, like its counterparts Italia and Portuguesa, would be relating to the homeland of these Mediterranean and Atlantic peoples now transplanted to South America.

Season Recap

Velez Sarsfield finished sixth of 20 teams in the Apertura (Opening Championship) and then won the Clausura (Closing Championship) in the Argentina Football Association National A Division in 1992-93 [1, 2]. It was only the fourth Championship victory for the traditionally Irish-Argentine Soccer team, and the first in 46 years [2]. With no playoff between the Apertura and Clausura Champions unlike in other South American Championships at the time, there was no Overall Champion for the 1992-93 season [2], and both Boca Juniors (Apertura Champions) and Velez Sarsfield (Clausura Champions) qualified for the Copa Libertadores – the South American Champions League [2].

About Velez Sarsfield

Velez Sarsfield are named after Dalmacio Velez Sarsfield, whose Grandfather George Sarsfield left Ireland in the early 1700s [4]. Dalmacio is a hugely important figure in Argentina, having written the country’s civil code in 1856 [4]. The Code remained in use until 2015. Velez Sarsfield are a multi-sport club based in the Capital Buenos Aires, and are most famous for their successful Soccer team.
