League Report

The second American Soccer League to take the name “Eastern Professional Soccer League”, the league arose out of a dispute between three clubs (New York Giants, Bethlehem Steel and Newark) and the American Soccer League I. The three clubs defied the ASL and entered the US Open Cup, and the ASL then banned them. The USFA (which ran the US Open Cup at the time) then responded by creating the EPSL, which added teams from the Southern New York State Association (SNYSA). The EPSL II played three seasons (Fall 1928, and Spring & Fall 1929) before merging with the ASL I after a peace deal to form the Atlantic Coast League.

At the time Soccer was the big Professional Sport in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New England, with Professional American Football (the NFL) most popular in Ohio, Upstate New York, New York City and the Mid-West (Wisconsin, Chicago, Illinois, Michigan).

Irish Players

Bethlehem Steel included the Irish players Pitt, who joined from Newry Town, as well as McMeekim and Gibson. All three players joined Glentoran in Northern Ireland for the 1931-32 Irish Football League season. [Reference: 2]

European Soccer Super League Proposition

With the new World Club Cup from next year being a 24-team tournament like the World Cup for countries, and the Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic bringing to full focus the amount of games players are playing and the need for safety in scheduling, Eirball takes a look at what could be a solution to the problem of a European Super League.

While reading the South American Football Yearbook 2020-2021 by Gabriel Mantz, available at Soccer Books Limited: http://www.soccer-books.com/ the author noticed that the Brazilian State League run alongside the Brazilian National Championship i.e teams take part in both, with the State Leagues taking up the first 2-3 months before the National Championship takes over.

Here is the suggestion for the possibility of a European Super League: that teams continue to play in their National League for the first 5-6 months, playing a 30-34 game schedule, and then the top teams play in a European Super League with two levels for the last 3 months. It is possible to have the 32 team format, teams could just be divided into 2 groups of 18 (36 teams) based on geography (North and South or East and West) and play a 17-game schedule with the top 8 of each group reaching a knockout phase played, like this summers Champions League, over the course of two weeks in a single host country, chosen beforehand. There could be relegation and promotion wthin the two levels. Eirball has stuck with EU countries for this line-up. Turkey and the CIS countries could also be involved.

Report

There were two professional soccer leagues in North America in 1967, both attempting at the same time to bring Pro Soccer to USA & Canada. The United Soccer Association was the FIFA-sponsored league and featured teams from Europe and South America guesting as North American teams over a Summer Schedule in between their normal Winter schedules. It included Shamrock Rovers (playing as Boston Rovers) and Glentoran (playing as Detroit Cougars). The other league was the National Professional Soccer League, and after the season the two leagues merged in 1968 to form the North American Soccer League which lasted until 1984.

Among the Rovers players over in Boston were Liam Tuohy, Frank O’Neill, Paddy Mulligan, Davy Pugh ad Tommy Kelly.

The side also included Carlos Metidieri, A Brazilian-born USA International, as gueat player, and his younger brother, Gilson.

After the merger with the NPSL, the Boston Rovers side became the Boston Beacons, a team in its own right, but kept the link with Shamrock Rovers. Paddy Mulligan was loaned out to the Beacons side in 1968 by Shamrock Rovers, but most of the team returned, and the side lost its mainly Irish make-up. [Reference: 4]

Report

Kearney Irish won the American Soccer League in 1933-34 – usually called ASL II as there was an American Soccer League from 1921 to 1933 which was a different League despite the same name. It was the first season of the new League which was to be dominated by teams referencing immigrant groups.

Kearny scots won the League from 1936 to 1941 and from 1941 to 1953 Philadelphia Nationals and Philadelphia Americans won 9 Championships between them. New York Hakoah, a Jewish-American team won from 1956-1958 and from 1960 to 1964 the winners were Ukrainian Nationals Philadelphia.

The last winners of the American Soccer League II as a Major League were the Baltimore St. Gerards, who may also have had Irish connections.

While the ASL II operated as the Men’s Major Soccer League in the USA from 1933 to 1967 it was superceded by the North American Soccer League which ran from 1967 to 1983. The ASL II continued to operate as a second level also until 1983.

Report

Chris McCann of the Republic of Ireland played 6 games in Midfield for DC United in Major League Soccer, the highest level in the USA in 2019, as the team finished 5th in the Eastern Conference and reached the first round of the playoffs.

James O’Connor, also of Republic of Ireland, who was appointed on 29th June 2018, was trainer (manager) for Orlando City SC, also in the MLS as they finished 11th in the Eastern Conference also of the MLS. After the 11th place finish Orlando City SC let James O’Connor go, their third trainer in five years, suggesting the problems were deeper than the trainer.
