Recap

Billy Whitehurst returned to South China in the Hong Kong League for 1992-93 after appearing to wind down his career at Glentoran in Northern Ireland. The Northern Ireland player had previously also played for Hull City and Sunderland in the English Football League. [1]

While at South China he sparked a revival at the team in time to capture the Viceroy Cup, one of three prestigious Cups in the colony. Whitehurst scored one of three goals in their 3-0 victory over Eastern in the Final. [1] The revival did not last and Whitehurst returned to England at the end of the season after scoring only two goals. [2]

About Billy Whitehurst

Whitehurst was born in Northern Ireland on 10 June 1959. Billy was named the “Hardest Man in Football” by notorious AFC Wimbledon hardman Vinnie Jones [3], once playing with a broken face after stitches were removed following a clash with the opposition Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Steve Sutton [4] . Billy said he looked like Frankenstein on the pitch having stitches put in on the spot and playing the whole match with them. When asked what is was like to be the hardest man in Football, Vinnie Jones remarked that “You better ask him” gesturing to Whitehurst.

Report

Terry McFlynn played in four matches for Sydney FC in the AFC Champions League in 2011. The Northern Ireland National was sent off in the first group game against Suwon Samsung Bluewings FC of South Korea after 33 minutes of a 0-0 draw at home. Missing the next two matches due to suspension Terry returned for a 3-2 victory away to Shanghai Shenhua of China, although he was again cautioned, this time getting a yellow card after 19 minutes. He played in the next two matches, losses to the Suwon Samsung Bluewings FC in Korea (1-3) and Kashima Antlers FC in Japan (1-2) as the Australian team crashed out of the competition in the Group Stage. Terry was substituted after 81 minutes of the loss to Kashima Antlers FC. Suwon Samsung Bluewings FC won the Group and Kashima Antlers FC also qualified for the last 16.

Sadd SC Doha from Qatar, who had to go through the Qualifying Rounds to qualify for the Group Stage, eventually won the competition 4-2 on penalties in the Final versus Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC of South Korea, after a 2-2 draw. Sadd SC had some good fortune along the way, however, as a 1-0 loss away to Foolad Mobarekeh Sepahan FC in the Quarter-Finals was overturned and awarded 3-0 to Sadd SC due to Foolad Mobarekeh fielding an ineligible player. Having lost the second leg also 1-2 at home, Sadd FC would have been eliminated if it was not for the 3-0 awarded victory.
