Series 6

The FAI SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Premier Division just completed series 6 of the 2023 season on St. Patrick’s Day. Bohemian FC lead the Table on 15 points, three ahead of Derry City FC on 12 points in second place with Dundalk FC in third on 11 points. Shamrock Rovers and St. Patrick’s Athletic FC were left struggling on 5 points in second and third last place after a 2-2 draw at Tallaght Stadium on St. Patrick’s Day.

Series 16 (19 May 2023)

Derry City moved back to the top of the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Premier Division after a 4-1 defeat of UCD AFC at the Brandywell as Shamrock Rovers suffered a shock 1-2 loss at home to Drogheda United FC. In other matches Dundalk FC and Bohemian FC drew 2-2 in a game both needed to win if they were to make up ground on the leaders. St. Patrick’s Athletic joined Dundalk on 26 points after leap-frogging Shelbourne FC with a 1-0 victory at Tolka Park. Shelbourne dropped back to sixth place with the loss. Sligo Rovers FC lost 1-0 at Cork City, helping Cork City to move six points clear of UCD AFC at the foot of the table. [References: 1-2]

Series 18 (26-27 May 2023)

Derry City missed out on the chance to stretch their lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division after losing 1-0 at Sligo Rovers in a North-West derby. Nearest challengers Shamrock Rovers FC lost 1-0 at struggling Cork City FC the previous night. Moving to three points behind the Hoops were fierce rivals Bohemians as the Red and Black drew 0-0 with near neighbours Shelbourne in the Dublin Northside derby. St. Patrick’s Athletic, the South City rivals to both Rovers and Bohs defeated Dundalk FC 2-1 at Richmond Park in Inchicore to move clear of Dundalk into fourth place on 29 points, just one behind Bohs. Meanwhile in County Louth, Drogheda United defeated UCD AFC 3-1 in a relegation six-pointer, with the loss meaning the students were further adrift at the bottom as both Drogheda and Cork won. Series 22 (23 June 2023)

Shamrock Rovers FC drew 2-2 at Bohemian FC as their lead at the top dropped to four points after Derry City FC’s 2-0 defeat of Cork City FC. St. Patrick’s Athletic FC remained a point behind Derry on 38 points with a 1-0 victory over Shelbourne FC. Dundalk FC drew level with Bohs on 35 points after winning the Louth derby 2-1. Sligo Rovers, meanwhile, failed to take advantage of both Drogheda United FC and Cork City FC losing, as the Yeats County team lost 2-1 at UCD AFC in what was only the second victory in 21 games in the league this season for UCD AFC. Series 25 (14-15 July 2023)

A 3-0 win at the Showgrounds for Sligo Rovers over Cork City gave the fans in the North West some hope of surviving relegation, but the result sent a message of doom to Cork City fans. Sligo are now fourth from bottom on 29 points while Cork City are second from last on 23 points. With Drogheda picking up a 3-1 win at the already relegated UCD AFC to move to 28 points, Cork City are now five points adrift of guaranteed safety. Shelbourne FC and Bohemian FC drew 1-1 in the other match played on the weekend of 14-15 July, a result that suited neither team in the race for the title and European qualification places. Rescheduled (28 July 2023)

Bohemian FC’s 2-0 win over UCD AFC lifted them clear of Dundalk FC in fourth place, while heaping further misery on last-placed UCD AFC. Drogheda United FC drew 2-2 at Head in the Game Park versus Sligo Rovers FC, putting the teams six and seven points clear of ninth-placed Cork City, who lost 0-2 at home to Shelbourne FC, a result that left the Leesiders on 23 points and brought Shelbourne FC within striking distance of Dundalk FC, with the teams on 38 and 39 points respectively, in mid-table. Series 26 (4-6 August 2023)

Shamrock Rovers FC defeated struggling Cork City FC 2-1 thanks to goals from Graham Burke just before the half-hour mark and Liam Burt on 51 minutes after Barry Coffey had equalised for Cork City on 35 minutes. Rovers remained four points ahead of second-placed St. Patrick’s Athletic FC having reached 50 points with the victory. St. Pat’s’ 2-0 win at Sligo Rovers FC kept them in touch with their Dublin Southside rivals thanks to goals from Christopher Forrester and Sam Curtis in the first half. Bohemian FC kept in touch with St. Pat’s, remaining a point further back as the Dalymount Park team won 4-2 at home to Drogheda United FC. A brace from Jonathan Afolabi after Kacper Radkowski had put Bohs in the lead put the Gypsies 3-2 up. Evan Weir and Jamie Egan had twice equalised for the Drogs but Weir went from hero to villain in the space of three minutes with a red-card just after scoring to make it 1-1. Three minutes after Egan made it 2-2 on 75 minutes, Afolabi netted his second and James Clarke finished off the scoring with Bohs’ fourth goal on 86 minutes to leave the score 4-2 at the finish. The only other match played at the August Bank Holiday Weekend was a 1-1 draw between Dundalk FC and Shelbourne FC as Harry Wood equalised for Shels on 83 minutes after John Martin opened for Dundalk on 39 minutes. The result was what neither side would have wished for, as they dropped further behind the top three. Series 27 (11-13 August 2023)

The bottom two, Cork City FC and UCD AFC drew 1-1 at Turner’s Cross, a result that suited neither team. Danu Kinsella Bishop answered Cian Bargary’s first half effort with a goal on 66 minutes for UCD AFC. Daniel Kelly’s 10 minute strike gave Dundalk FC a 1-0 victory over Sligo Rovers FC at Oriel Park, which saw the border side reduce the gap to leaders Shamrock Rovers FC to eight points in a very competitive top six. Shamrock Rovers FC were frustrated by a Shelbourne FC side at Tolka Park in a match that resulted in 11 yellow cards – seven for Rovers and four for Shels. In statistics that really matter, Shamrock Rovers FC saw their 21st minute opener by Markus Poom cancelled by Gavin Molloy four minutes into time added on. Rovers moved onto 51 points and Shels to 40 points as the Dublin 7 team may have felt they lost a chance on their home turf to reduce the gap on the leaders. Second and fourth placed St. Patrick’s Athletic FC and Bohemian FC battled to a 0-0 draw at Richmond Park in Inchicore, Dublin 8, meaning Derry City FC were the only team in the Top Four to win in Series 27 Weekend, as the Candystripes moved into third above Bohs by defeating Drogheda United FC 3-0 at the Brandywell. Late goals from Jamie McGonigle and Michael Duffy sealed the win after Jordan McEneff opened the scoring four minutes before halftime.
