Series 1 Recap (18 Feb-19 Feb 2022)

Shamrock Rovers FC and St. Patrick’s Athletic both got off the great starts in the 2022 SSE Airtricity League Premier Division with 3-0 wins, Rovers at home in Tallaght Stadium versus South Dublin rivals UCD and St. Pat’s away to Shelbourne FC in what is always a difficult game away in Tolka Park. In the other game played Dundalk drew 2-2 with Derry City at Oriel Park. Reference [1-2]

Series 2 Recap (25 Feb-26 Feb 2022)

St. Patrick’s Athletic and Shamrock Rovers FC both fell to 1-2 defeats in the second series after winning their opening game 3-0. Rovers lost at Derry City, putting the Candystripes on four points, while St. Pat’s lost at home to Sligo Rovers. Dundalk again drew 2-2, this time at Dalymount Park versus Bohemians, while Louth neighbours Drogheda United lost 0-2 at home to Shelbourne FC. In the weekends other match UCD and Finn Harps drew 0-0 at the UCD Bowl. Reference: [1-2]

Series 3 Recap (28 Feb 2022)

Shamrock Rovers FC got back to winning ways with a 3-1 defeat of Drogheda United in Tallaght, Bohemians defeated crosstown rivals St. Patrick’s Athletic 1-0 at Dalymount Park and Dundalk had a big 3-0 victory at Oriel Park versus Finn Harps. The other two Premier Division games were both 0-0 draws: UCD at home to Shelbourne FC and Derry City at home to Sligo Rovers in a North West derby game. The days results meant Shamrock Rovers FC took over top spot on 6 points, with Dundalk and Derry City hot on their heels on five points. A point further back on four points but with games in hand were Bohemians and Sligo Rovers, and Shelbourne were also on four points but having played a full programme so far. The relegation places were being held by Drogheda United, on no points, and Finn Harps on one point, although both had a game in hand on UCD on two points and St. Patrick’s Athletic on three points. Derry City leapfrogged Shamrock Rovers at the top of the table with a 1-0 at Shelbourne FC as Rovers lost 0-1 at St. Pat’s, which moved the Inchicore team into fourth. Dundalk FC and Sligo Rovers drew 0-0 at the Showgrounds which left Dundalk in third and Sligo in sixth, behind Bohemians on goals scored after Bohs drew 1-1 at Sligo’s North West rivals Finn Harps. It was Harps’ second point of the season, moving them ahead of UCD who lost to bottom of the table Drogheda United 4-2 in Head in the Game Park, moving the Louth team up to eighth. Reference: [1-2]

Series 5 Recap (11-12 March)

With Derry City’s match at UCD AFC postponed, Shamrock Rovers FC, St. Patrick’s Athletic FC and Sligo Rovers FC all moved above the Candystripes with wins. Sligo had the biggest win of the night, winning 3-0 at Drogheda United FC, while St. Patrick’s Athletic won 2-0 at Finn Harps and Shamrock Rovers defeated Bohemians 1-0 in what is always a hotly-contested game between two fierce Dublin rivals. In the other game played Dundalk FC and Shelbourne FC drew 1-1 at Tolka Park in what was Dundalk’s fourth draw in five games in the 2022 season. With the exception of the top three places there was no change in places in the rest of the Premier Division table. [Reference: 1-2]

Series 6-7 Recap (14 March and 18 March 2022)

Derry City remained unbeaten at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division on 14 points with wins over Drogheda United (2-0) at and St. Patrick’s Athletic (2-1). Sligo Rovers were hot on their heels with a win over Finn Harps by a 3-1 scoreline in a North West derby. The Wee Bit o’ Red dropped two points at Shamrock Rovers FC, however, the following match. The 2-2 result at Tallaght, even though excellent for Sligo left them two points behind Derry City as the North West teams kept up the pace. Shamrock Rovers were a point behind Sligo after also drawing with Dundalk FC (0-0) the previous Monday. With the loss to Derry City, St. Patrick’s Athletic lost the top spot they had held following a 2-0 victory over UCD AFC. Dundalk FC, Bohemian FC and Shelbourne made up the mid-table spots with a slew of draws – 12 between them in 20 matches as Bohemians drew with Shelbourne FC and UCD AFC. Shelbourne went down heavily to Finn Harps by a 0-3 scoreline at Tolka Park, in the Donegal men’s first win of the season, lifting the Ballybofey side off the bottom which was left to UCD AFC. Drogheda United picked up a vital win in the Louth derby with Dundalk FC (1-0) at Head in the Game Park to go eighth in the table, one point above Harps. [References: [1-2]

Derry City opened up a three pointb gap at the top of the SSE Airtricity Premier Division with a 2-1 win at Bohemian FC. Shamrock Rovers FC moved into second on 14 points with a 3-0 win at Finn Harps FC, while St. Patrick’s Athletic FC and Sligo Rovers FC both fell below Shamrock Rovers after dropping points: St. Pat’s in a 1-1 draw at home to Drogheda United FC, and Sligo Rovers in a 0-1 loss at the Showgrounds versus Shelbourne FC, which put Shelbourne FC into sixth on nine points. Dundalk FC went fifth after a 2-0 win at home in Oriel Park versus UCD AFC. There were no changes in position among the bottom four, with UCD AFC still propping up the table without a win on three points and Finn Harps two points above them. Series 10-11 Recap (15-18 April 2022)

Shamrock Rovers FC closed the gap on Derry City FC at the top of the SSE Airtricity Premier Division with two 1-0 wins over St. Patrick’s Athletic FC and Dundalk FC, as Derry slipped up losing 1-2 at home to Shelbourne FC and drawing 1-1 away to Drogheda United FC. St. Patrick’s Athletic were six points behind Shamrock Rovers in third following a 2-1 win away to UCD, while there were three teams two points further back on 15 points: Dundalk FC, Sligo Rovers FC, and Bohemian FC. Bohs picked up a valuable three points with a 4-1 win over Shels at Tolka Park, while Sligo Rovers won 1-0 at Finn Harps after losing at Dundalk. Drogheda United and Shelbourne were on 13 and 12 points respectively, with Drogheda winning away to UCD 2-0 and Shels victory at leaders Derry moving both teams clear of the relegation zone. Harps managed a draw at Dalymount Park versus Bohemians but lost in the North West derby at home to Sligo Rovers 0-1. [References: 1-2]

Series 12 Recap (22-23 April 2022)

Derry City FC thrashed UCD AFC 7-1 to maintain their one point lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity Premier Division. Shamrock Rovers FC stayed in touch with the Candystripes thanks to a 3-1 win at arch rivals Bohemian FC while St. Patrick’s Atheltic remained a further six points behind following a 2-0 victory at Richmond Park over Finn Harps FC. The two other teams in the top half of the table also won as Sligo Rovers FC stayed a point behind St. Pat’s with a 3-2 victory over Drogheda United FC and a point further back on 18 were Dundalk FC who put three points between themselves and Bohs with a 2-1 victory over Shelbourne FC at Oriel Park. Shamrock Rovers FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds. Derry City opened up a three-point gap over the Tallaght team after a resounding 4-0 win at St. Patrick’s Athletic and Finn Harps gave themselves a timely boost with a 1-0 victory over Shelbourne FC in a relegation six-pointer. Harps are now only two points behind Shels. Bohemian FC moved to within striking distance of Sligo Rovers FC and St. Patrick’s Athletic after a 3-0 defeat of bottom-placed UCD AFC [References: 1-2]

Shamrock Rovers FC raced into a seven-point lead at the top of the table with a 3-0 victory at the Students in UCD as Derry City slipped up at home to third placed Dundalk FC, losing 1-2. In mid-table St. Patrick’s Athletic lost 1-2 at home to Shelbourne FC and Bohemian FC jumped above Sligo Rovers with a 2-1 at Dalymount Park. At the lower end of the table Drogheda United put some light between themselves and Finn Harps with a 3-1 win at home in a relegation six-pointer. [References: 1-2]

Series 17 Recap (23-24 May 2022)

The big news on Monday the 23rd of May was Drogheda United FC’s shock 1-0 win at Head in the Game Park versus league leaders Shamrock Rovers FC. Rovers lead remained seven points, however, as second placed Derry City FC failed to take advantage losing 3-1 at Sligo Rovers FC. Dundalk FC won 1-0 at Finn Harps FC to narrow the gap in third to just one point, while St. Patrick’s Athletic FC and Shelbourne FC both had big wins against Dublin clubs (3-0 versus Bohemian FC and 2-0 versus UCD AFC respectively) to maintain their challenges for European spots. Bohemian FC dropped below both Sligo Rovers and Shelbourne with their loss. [References: 1-2]

Series 18 Recap (28 May 2022)

Shamrock Rovers FC defeated Shelbourne FC 2-0 as Rovers lead stretched to eight points following Derry City FC’s 2-2 draw at the Brandywell in the North West derby versus Finn Harps FC. Dundalk FC moved ahead of the Candystripes into second place with a 1-0 victory over St. Patrick’s Athletic, who remained fourth. Fifth placed Sligo Rovers only managed a 1-1 draw at UCD AFC as the students remained two points adrift at the bottom of the table behind Harps. Bohemian FC and Drogheda United FC drew 1-1 at Dalymount Park as they remained seventh and eighth respectively but closed the gap on sixth-placed Shelbourne FC. [References: 1-2]

About the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division

The SSE Airtricity League Premier Division is the Highest Level Men’s Soccer League in the Republic of Ireland. Run by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) which governs Soccer in the Republic of Ireland, it is one of two Senior Level (National) Leagues in the Republic of Ireland. It is sponsored by SSE Airtricity. The season runs from 18 February 2022 to 5 November 2022.
