Republic of Ireland’s Gerry Peyton, who played goalkeeper for Republic of Ireland, and was on the Euro 88 and Italia 90 Republic of Ireland Squads, managed two games for Odisha in the Indian Super League in 2020-21. He took over from Stuart Baxter in February when the team was bottom but lasted just the two games.

Series 1-6 March 19 to April 20 2021

After 6 Series of the 2021 SSE Airtricity League Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers were joint top on identical records with 14 points from 6 matches and a goals for-goals against record of 9-4. St. Patrick’s Athletic were just behind in third also on 14 points and goal difference of +5 but with 8 goals scored to the two Rovers’ 9. Surprise packet Finn Harps were in fourth with wins over Bohemians and Dundalk in their opening two matches. At the other end of the table Derry City were struggling with only 2 points from their 6 matches and Dundalk and Waterford also in trouble with only three points to their names. Drogheda United (8 points), Bohemians (7 points) and Longford Town (5 Points) were in mid-table.

Series 7 April 23 to April 24 2021

St. Patrick’s Athletic moved above Shamrock Rovers into first place on goal difference following a 2-0 win at Finn Harps, as Rovers beat fierce rivals Bohemians 2-1. Sligo Rovers dropped into third following their first defeat of the season in the North West derby at home to Derry City. Derry’s fellow relegation strugglers Dundalk and Waterford also picked up valuable wins against Drogheda United in the Louth derby and Longford Town respectively, which dropped Longford Town into the bottom two.

Series 8-9 April 30 to May 3 2021

With two series in a week, Shamrock Rovers took over sole position in first with a 2-0 win at Finn Harps and a 3-0 win over Waterford, who dropped to bottom spot following another big loss three days previously, also 3-0, to Dundalk. St. Patrick’s Athletic slipped to second with a draw at Sligo Rovers who remained in third, two points ahead of Finn Harps, who put some light between themselves and fifth-placed Drogheda United with a win at the Brandywell against arch-rivals Derry City. The two Louth Clubs were level on 10 points each in mid-table with Drogheda United picking up two draws and Dundalk drawing at Longford as well as that win over Waterford. Bohemians continued to struggle, losing at home to Derry City, which moved the Candystripes off the bottom of the table. Longford and Waterford slipped into the bottom two.

While not strictly speaking an All-Ireland Soccer competition the Heritage Bowl was a preseason Bowl involving Connacht and Northern Ireland teams held at the same time as the North West Cup involving Northern Ireland and Donegal and Sligo teams. The 1997 Heritage Bowl, played in Miller’s Lane, Galway over the weekend of 1-2 August featured winners Galway United and Salthill Devon from the City of the Tribes and Omagh Town from Tyrone and Cliftonville from West Belfast. Galway United took home the Bowl with a 3-2 victory in the Final against Omagh Town. Cliftonville finished third by defeating Salthill Devon 5-2 withy a hat-trick by Barry O’Connor and a couple more by Sean Francis. The Semi-Finals on Friday night had seen Galway United knock out Cliftonville 4-3 with a hat-trick by Lucai and one from clery to put them 4-1 up before two goals in the last 10 minutes by O’Connor and Tolan put a respectable score on the board for the wee bit o’ red at the final whistle. Salthill Devon were no match for Omagh Town in the other match, losing 5-1 to goals by Donnelly (2), Mooney, Wilson and Melly. Despite equalising on 6 minutes through McDonagh the Connacht Senior League side were outclassed by the Irish League side.

The Major Arena Soccer League added a second division in 2017-18 – the MASL 2 – which initially featured 10 teams divided into Eastern and Western Conferences. Chicago Mustangs won through to the Championship Game where they won 7-0 versus Colorado Inferno FC. The following year the MASL 2 added a Mountain Division with a further 5 teams: two in New Mexico, two in Colorado and one in Juarez, Mexico. Juarez Cuervos won through to the Championship Game where they lost 7-5 to Pacific Division Champions San Diego Sockers 2 by seven goals to five. For 2019-20 the League became a single division, with Chihuahua Savage, Falls Town Flyers, Wichita Wings, Amarillo Bombers and Austin Power replaced many teams who were either promoted to the MASL or left the league. The 2019-20 season was unfinished due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, with Chihuahua Savage undefeated at 12-0 on top of the Standings. Chihuahua were named 2019-20 Regular Season Champions on September 19, 2020. [Reference: 15]

Report

The 2020-21 Galway Football Association EZ Living Furniture Ladies Premier League was suspended after two weeks due to COVID-19 coronavirus Pandemic restrictions. At the time Corrib Celtic and Corrib Rangers, the two traditional powers in the league were both on six points having won both games. The 2020-21 season featured two new teams in East Galway United from Kiltormer and Dunmore Town.

Report

Corrib Celtic and Corrib Rangers duelled from 2017 to 2019 for the Galway Football Association Ladies Senior League title. In 2017 the two teams were so evenly matches they went to a playoff in Eamonn Deacy Park, which Corrib Celtic won 3-1. The following season however Rangers took the League with 27 points from their 10 games to Celtic’s 24. Bearna na Forbacha were replaced for the 2019 season by Colemanstown United, and Corrib Celtic won the Championship back. Cregmore/Claregalway FC were their closest challengers that season as Corrib Rangers slipped back to third. For the 2020 season Dunmore Town replaced Athenry but the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic. the 2020-21 season was intended to run Autumn-Spring rather than a Summer League and featured new additions Kiltullagh and East Galway United. The Senior League was renamed the EZ Living Furntiture Ladies Premier League for sponsorship reasons.

Report

Athenry won the Galway Football Association Western Hygiene Supplies Premier Division in both 2016-17 and 2017-18, the latter after a playoff with Mervue United. Mervue United, after being runners-up two years running finally won the Premier Division in 2018-19 by a single point from Athenry. The League was suspended halfway through in 2019-20 due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic and then again after 3 weeks of the 2020-21 season due to the same Pandemic.

Jake Mulraney, born in Dublin, Ireland, played 18 games, scoring 8 goals for Atlanta United in Major League Soccer 2020. In addition, 6 Irish Players and one Northern Ireland played in USL League 1 and 3 Irish Players in USL League 2. In the Canadian Premier League, HFX Wanderers FC of Halifax, Nova Scotia had their club Motto in Gaelic on their Club Crest. Chris Conlon, from Ardee in Co. United Soccer League Championship 2020 – Report

Six Irish and one Northern Ireland player competed in the United Soccer League Championship (North America Division 2) in 2020. Defender Corey Whelan experienced the most success on the field, playing in 18 games for Phoenix Rising Fc as they reached the Final against Tamp Bay Rowdies, only to find the game abandoned due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic. Other Republic of Ireland declared players were Richie Ryan, a Midfielder who played 17 games with El Paso Locomotive FC as they reached the Semi-Finals, losing to Whelan’s Phoenix Rising FC on penalties after a 1-1 draw, and Louisville City’s Niall McCabe who played 5 games in Midfield for the other Semi-Finalists, who lost 1-2 to the Rowdies.

Northern Ireland’s Cameron Palmer, who scored 2 goals in 13 games for Orange County SC and Patrick Barrett, who scored a single goal in 13 games for Indy eleven were among the players to miss out on the playoffs. Rob Kiernan also played for Orange County, playing in 15 games. Goalkeeper Ryan Coulter played 90 minutes for Rio Grande Valley FC in Texas, but otherwise stayed on the bench all season. The United Soccer League 1 cancelled the League 1 Final scheduled for October 29th 2020, and declared Greenville Triumph SC Champions based on Points Per Game (PPG). Three Irish players played in the USL League 1 in 2020, Niall Logue played all 16 games for FC Tucson (Arizona) as they finished 6th of 11 teams. Steven Beattie of Chattanooga Red Wolves (Tennessee) played 8 games, scoring 2 goals as they finished 5th, and Mikie Rowe scored one goal in 11 games South Georgia Tormenta FC as they came 8th. Report – Canadian Premier League 2020

HFX Wanderers FC, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, have the motto “Ar Cala, Ar Dachaigh, Ar n-Anam” in Gaelic on their Club Crest meaning “Our Harbour, Our Home, Our Soul”. they finished runners-up in the First stage in the Canadian Premier League in 2020 to Cavalry FC of Calgary, Alberta and also runners-up to Forge FC of Hamilton, Ontario in the Group Stage (four-team second stage), thus qualifying for the CPL Final where they lost 2-0 to Forge FC. Irish Catholic teams have played in the Scottish Football League sice its inception in 1890-91, with Celtic (Glasgow) first playing the SFA Cup in 1889 and becoming founder mmbers of the Scottish Football League in 1890. Hibernian (Edinburgh) joined three years later in 1893-94. Dundee United, replacing Dundee Hibernians (1910-11 to 1914-15 and again from 1921-22 for only one season) joined in 1923-24 when the SFL was expancded to a third Division. Dumbarton Harp were a shortlived SFL team during that Division 3 expansion, lasting two seasons (until 1924-25). Celtic, Hibernians and Dundee United are members of the Scottish Professional Football League to this day.

Report

The Irish Junior Cup, first held in 1888 entered the modern era after World War II. From then until 1969-70 no team won it twice, when Dunmurry YC won for the second time. The IFA Junior Cup specialists, however, were Oxford United of Lurgan, who appeared in the FInal nine times between 1981-82 and 1997-98, winning on seven occasions. Immaculata won three in a row from 2007-08 to 2009-10, Harryville Homers likewise from 2013-14 to 2015-16 and also Enniskillen Rangers from 2016-17 to 2018-19 for four wins in total.
