Report

Uganda won the 1989 East and Central Africa Cup hosted in Kenya, by defeating Malawi on penalties in the Final after a 3-3 draw. The seven Nations were drawn into two groups along with Kenya’s B Team. The two Groups could not have been more different with Group A, featuring Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Tanzania providing a high-scoring spectacle with 20 goals in the six games.

By contrast Group B with Zambia, Malawi, Zanzibar and Kenya B only provided three goals across the entire six matches – three games finishing 0-0 and three games 1-0. The Semi-Finals saw Uganda defeat Zambia 3-1 and Malawi knock hosts Kenya out 1-0. The Bronze Medal was won by Kenya who edged Zambia 1-0 in the Third Place Playoff.
