Shamrock Rovers FC won the League of Ireland at the first attempt in 1922-23, and did so in style, finishing five points ahead runners-up Shelbourne and seven points above third-placed Bohemian FC, and in the process starting a three-way League of Ireland rivalry lasting over 100 years.
Regining champions St. James’ Gate, representing Guinness brewery, who won the inaugural 1921-22 League of Ireland season, finished fifth in this, the second season. Midlands newcomers Athlone Town finished a respectable sixth, followed by Jacobs, Pioneers and Midland Athletic.
Olympia, Dublin United and Rathmines finished well off the pace in the bottom three positions and did not return to the League of Ireland for its’ third season, 1923-24. The three teams were replaced by a single team for season three: Brooklyn.
